Manchester United grateful for Ben Foster gesture to Nathan Bishop

Ben Foster first went on tour with Manchester United 17 years ago and he was back in their dressing room on Wednesday night.

Wrexham goalkeeper Foster visited the United premises after the game to reassure Nathan Bishop, who had injured Paul Mullin.

Mullin suffered a punctured lung after Bishop barged into him in the 12th minute of Wrexham's 3-1 win over a United side comprised mainly of under-21 players. Mullin required an oxygen mask.

Bishop looked crestfallen when he attempted to board the United team coach and was informed he would have to walk through the mixed zone and briefly do a meet-and-greet with VIP fans.

Foster, 40, said he felt "so bad for Nathan Bishop", who is represented by the same agency as Mullin and attempted to contact the Wrexham talisman.

Foster's comments differ markedly from Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson, who advised Bishop to "steer clear" of Wrexham. United staff noted how an irate Parkinson approached the referee at the interval to confront him over his failure to dismiss Bishop. A United source suggested Parkinson's grievance had a bearing on the harsh dismissal of midfielder Dan Gore early in the second half.

A United source reiterated their primary concern is Mullin's recovery and everyone at the club wishes him a swift recovery. But United genuinely appreciated the veteran Foster's human touch with 23-year-old Bishop and that he recognised the challenge was accidental.

Twenty-four hours after the game, figures at United reiterated Bishop was still upset by Mullin's injury and that Parkinson's heated reaction had not helped matters.
