Manchester United need to repeat Alvaro Fernandez transfer tactic this summer

If you were one of the hardy souls that climbed out of bed in the early hours of the morning to watch Manchester United's clash with Wrexham last week, you were probably left regretting it.

A young and inexperienced United side slumped to a 3-1 defeat to the EFL newcomers at the Snapdragon Stadium, marking the club's first official defeat of their pre-season tour of the United States. The contest was, of course, overshadowed by Wrexham striker Paul Mullin suffering a punctured long after a coming together with now former United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.

That compounded what was, overall, a disappointing evening for the young Reds, most of whom had flown across the Atlantic specifically for the clash with the League Two side. Among them was Marc Jurado, who provided the only flash of positivity on an otherwise low-key evening.

He scored United's only goal of the game, turning home an excellent side-foot volley to eat into Wrexham's 2-0 advantage shortly before half-time. He connected superbly with Alvaro Fernandez's cross, leaving former United shot-stopper Ben Foster with no chance in the Wrexham goal.

Jurado, who joined United in May 2020 after turning down a fresh contract offer at Barcelona, started on the right of the back-four against Wrexham, with fellow countryman Fernandez starting on the left. Their combination play and understanding for the goal, though it was only a friendly, was eye-catching and worthy of a round of applause.
