Tom Heaton makes decision on Manchester United future

Tom Heaton is staying at Manchester United after talks with Erik ten Hag.

Goalkeeper Heaton, 37, sought clarification on his future during United’s pre-season tour of the United States amid interest from Luton Town and Hull City.

Heaton started in five of United's seven pre-season games and is understood to have had a "good conversation" with Ten Hag.

Ten Hag made Heaton captain for the 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Sunday and the former England goalkeeper is encouraged by his recent increased playing time.

United extended Heaton’s contract by a year in the summer after deciding to release David de Gea, while Dean Henderson is still expected to leave before the transfer window closes.

Heaton has only started two competitive games for United since he rejoined the club in July 2021. Heaton returned to United under the assumption he would be the number two 'keeper but he was third choice for most of the campaign.

United could still recruit another 'keeper after they sold back-up goalie Nathan Bishop to Sunderland last week, while Matej Kovar was omitted from the pre-season tour squad ahead of another intended loan move.

Ten Hag loaned in Martin Dubravka from Newcastle and Jack Butland from Crystal Palace as cover in goal last term.
