"It's not normal here": The fear over 'something inexplicable' from Jay Slater search scene in Tenerife

For 12 days the Cruz de Hilda viewpoint was a hive of police activity. The platform gives stunning views above the north-west Tenerife village of Masca and the dramatic landscape of the Rural Parc de Teno.

It was a handy vantage spot for the official search operation to find Lancashire 19-year-old Jay Slater, who disappeared four weeks ago today, on June 17. The apprentice bricklayer, from Oswaldtwislte, headed north from a rave in Playa de las Americas to the remote corner of the Canary Island after being invited to an Airbnb on the fringe of Masca by two men.

He left the property on foot, reportedly called friend Lucy Law at 8.30am to say he was lost and had one per cent battery on his phone, and has been missing since. Emergency services swarmed the Cruz de Hilda area until June 30, as they spent 12 days trying to find the teenager.

Efforts to find Jay have continued ever since, with volunteers and members of his family trekking with hopes they can hit a breakthrough. But in the meantime, life in the Rural Parc de Teno has returned to normal, with hikers and tourists regularly passing by to enjoy the idyllic surroundings.

Beneath the Cruz de Hilda platform where police were based is a café. It's likely to have been closed when Jay was in the area - but would have opened at 10am on June 17.
