Chuck Hay Farmers' Bonspiel set to welcome teams from around the country to Dewars Centre

It’s where auld acquaintances will be renewed and new friendships made.

Final preparations are under way for the inaugural Chuck Hay Farmers’ Curling Bonspiel which, from January 24-26, will now welcome 40 teams to the respected ice of Dewars Centre.

That is at least 160 competitors from all over the country arriving in the city for great competition and great times which, in turn, is set to provide a financial boost for local business.

The much-anticipated tournament, which is being sponsored by Thorntons, gives a special nod to Perthshire curling stalwart Chuck Hay – Scotland’s first world champion – who sadly passed away in August 2017 at the age of 87.

Son Dave, a world and European champion himself, was blown away by the interest shown as soon as entries went live.

“It was moving for the family to see the response,” he told the PA on Friday.

“Although it is called the Chuck Hay Farmers’ Bonspiel, it is a fairly loose connection to farming.

“We were not looking for everyone to be involved in ploughing the land or milking cows. We were looking for people who have an association with the rural community.

“Chuck was a farmer and he loved curling so it is the appropriate mix. If the event goes well – which I’m sure it will do – then we can extend the entry further next year.”

The tournament committee also includes Stuart Stark, Alan Wood, Sandy Hay and Athlin Phillips, all of whom have been working hard to provide the perfect platform for a wonderful three days.

Included will be a players’ party with hot buffet on the Thursday evening at Dewars Centre, providing the ideal chance for a spot of socialising and reminiscing.
