Renton boxing star pledges to bring back Commonwealth gold to thank community for support

Renton boxer Caitlin Kelly has pledged to bring back Commonwealth gold to thank the community for their support.

The 21-year-old is set to travel to Argentina for a Scotland training camp later this month, and has been backed by Haldane’s Koppo Jutsu martial arts school and the Community Party.

Caitlin told the Lennox: “It’s great to have the support of Koppo Jutsu and the Community Party, Drew MacEoghainn has really backed us.

“He contacted me last week because I’d put a post on Facebook about sponsorship to see if I could get some people on board for the new season.

“I’ll be away travelling for the whole of September with the Scotland team so it’s a massive help.

“Drew is a great guy and someone who has always done things for the community in Renton. I’ve always known him as someone who gives back to the community and he’s been a great help for me.

“I promised Drew that I’ll get the gold medal in 2026 and take it back to show the kids. Hopefully they’ll still be there and can see that they can achieve that too.

“It would be amazing if the Commonwealth Games were in Glasgow. The support from family and friends would be incredible. Everyone would get behind us. It would be the best outcome for me.

“The celebrations when I bring back the gold would be absolutely mad.”

Funding was organised by Koppo Jutsu’s Drew, who also leads the Community Party.

And he has called on others to back local sporting talent.

Drew said: “My club, Koppo Jutsu, which runs classes in Mill Cabin has agreed to offer Caitlin £200 to go towards her costs.

“That’s a third of the money we have saved and we think other sports clubs, West Dunbartonshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Leisure, should be looking at their vast turnover and ensuring a
