Southerness Golf Club raises more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support

A golf club’s charity fundraising efforts have hit six figures.

The ladies section at Southerness Golf Club holds the Rose Trophy competition to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

And now the amount raised over the years has reached an incredible £107,000.

Lady captain, Trish Cook, said: “It was first held in 1990 and it was set up by Dr Betty Rose, who was a former lady captain.

“The first time it raised around £200, which was a lot of money even back then.

“We get use of the course for free, the club don’t take anything from us, so everything we raise from entry and the raffle and donations goes to Macmillan.

“We’re averaging about £6,000 a year, which is fantastic.”

Relationship fundraising manager for Macmillan in Scotland, Bruce Port, said: “What an outstanding amount the ladies at Southerness Golf Club have now raised with their annual Rose Trophy competition. Cancer affects us all and the reality is one in two of us will be diagnosed with it at some point in our lives. The people of Dumfries and Galloway, and all around Scotland, need our support. Cancer isn’t going anywhere.

“We can’t thank Trish Crook and all the ladies of Southerness enough for their 25 years of support. The money they raise allows us to continue doing whatever it takes to support people living with cancer in Scotland.

“Raising a phenomenal £107,000 is an amazing achievement and we’d like to say a huge thank you from everyone at Macmillan. I am in awe of these incredible women and can’t wait to see what they achieve next.”
