Rangers transfer solution that is 'miles ahead' of Doig and Yilmaz named as Ibrox insider gives ultimate endorsement

Distance is the only barrier getting in the way of Niko Katic’s friendship with his old Rangers buddy Borna Barisic these days.

But the former Gers favourite reckons the rivals looking to pinch his best-mate’s left-back slot have miles of their own to make up if they want to oust Barisic from the Light Blues back-line. With Barisic out of contract this summer, Ibrox gaffer Philippe Clement has got a major decision on his hands where the Croatian is concerned. Signed from Osijek in 2018 by Steven Gerrard, the 31-year-old has had as many ups and downs as any player during the five-and-a-half years since - but he’s been in fabulous form since the new Belgian boss’ October arrival.

Ridvan Yilmaz has been unable to shift him out of the team on a lasting basis and now appears to be closing in on a move to Serie A outfit Verona. Rumours in Italy suggest former Hibs star Josh Doig has been sounded out about making the move in the opposite direction. But as far as Katic is concerned, there’s only one man for the job.

The centre-back - now starring for Swiss side FC Zurich - told Record Sport: “I still speak with Borna a lot. When we moved to Glasgow, we became so close. We lived in the same building and spent every day together.

“That friendship’s continued since I left. Borna’s a top player. He’s been playing for almost six years consistently at a high level. That’s not down to luck. He’s done it consistently for a long time.

“I’m sure the people at Rangers are aware of his qualities and would like to keep him for another two or three years.

“In Europe, he always performs. I’ve spoken with Borna and he’s enjoying it under Clement, so I think they will make a new deal. With all due respect to those two [Doig and Yilmaz], I think
