Gijs Smal to Rangers transfer end game nears as Twente insider reveals ultimatum with PSV watching on
Gjis Smal has reportedly been issued a hardline ultimatum by FC Twente over a new deal with Rangers among the clubs monitoring the left-back.
Both Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz face uncertain futures at Ibrox with the Croat out of contract in the summer while the Turkish international reportedly attracting interest from Galatasaray and Hellas Verona this month. Philippe Clement has already stated that neither left-back will be leaving this month until another arrives - but Twente's 26-year-old could offer a solution.
The Eredivise outfit are reported to have reached the end of the road with Smal - who they have offered a new contract to but has yet to commit his future to the club. He is now free to speak to other clubs and AD 's Twente reporter Leon ten Voorde claims patience has worn thing with the defender. He told the De Warming Up podcast: "FC Twente have said 'Take it or leave it.'
"Twente is a big club, and he wasn't sold in the summer. He is completely free to go where he wants. If he wants to leave on a free transfer in the summer, that is up to him. It is his choice, his career, but the club is still there. If you see what him plat at this moment, then I think: this is it for him."
Smal - nicknamed 'Smaldini' in his homeland for his similarities to legendary Italian full back Paolo Maldini - signed for Twente three years ago on a free transfer from Volendam and last season had more assists than anyone in the Dutch top flight. Despite injury hampering his campaign, Dutch outlet SciSports claim that PSV are also keeping tabs on the star man along with Rangers.
