LIVE: Liverpool Parade crash cops charge Paul Doyle, 53, over incident - latest updates

Merseyside Police will be holding a press conference this evening following a crash which injured dozens of pedestrians in Liverpool on Monday (May 26).

A nine-year-old child was among 79 people injured after a car ploughed into crowds at the Liverpool FC trophy parade on Water Street in the city centre.

Huge crowds had gathered before they were struck by a Ford Galaxy car shortly after 6pm. Seven people remained in hospital, in a stable condition, as of Wednesday afternoon.

It has been reported that the Ford travelled along Dale Street before it moved onto Water Street - despite both roads having traffic management for the parade.

Police confirmed that there was a partial closure of an area of Dale Street between North John Street and Exchange Street East and said traffic was filtered down the latter road to stop any traffic getting on to Water Street. It's thought the driver had tailgated behind an ambulance when the road closure was temporarily lifted.

Merseyside Police will hold a press conference at the force’s HQ at 5pm today to provide a further update in relation to the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims and Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire Sarah Hammond will deliver prepared statements.
