LIVE: Large cordon in place as fire breaks out - latest updates

There is a large cordon in place in Bury this morning (Sunday) as firefighters tackle a fire at an industrial unit. The blaze broke out at a heat treatment works on Lord Street, just outside the town centre, at around 7:30am this morning (Sunday).

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said a Magnesium furnace has 'failed' at a heat treatment works. Five fire engines are currently on the scene as crews attempt to isolate the furnace and extinguish the fire.

The roads surrounding the building have been closed by police with officers guarding cordon as fire crews continue their work.

Roads surrounding the building including Lord Street and Parker Street have been taped off with the public being urged to avoid the area for now

These pictures we've just been sent from the scene show firefighters working in and around Wallwork, a heat treatment plant on Lord Street, on the outskirts of Bury town centre

The fire service have just released a statement on the incident.

A spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News:

At around 7:30am this morning (Sunday, 14th January), firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a commercial building on Lord Street in Bury.

Five fire engines from Bury, Heywood, Whitefield, Broughton and Ramsbottom fire stations, as well as the Scorpion and the Environmental Protection Unit quickly arrived at the scene, where a furnace has failed at a heat treatment works.

Greater Manchester Police have closed the roads around the building while crews work to isolate the furnace and extinguish the fire.
