LIVE: Fire crews race to tackle fire in Manchester as smoke plumes seen across city - latest updates

A large fire has broken out in Manchester city centre this afternoon as crews race to the scene.

Multiple fire engines could be seen racing to Peary Street in Angel Meadow, near Angel Meadow Park, just after 1pm on Sunday (January 28). Footage shows black smoke billowing from a premises as crews work to tackle the blaze.

The incident is ongoing this afternoon. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:“At around 1.10pm on Sunday 28 January, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a commercial building on Peary Street, Manchester.

“Three fire engines from Blackley, Philips Park and Salford stations are at the scene. Firefighters are using breathing apparatus and hose reels to tackle the fire.”

We have an updated statement from GMFRS stating fire crews were in attendance for around two hours.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:“At around 1.10pm on Sunday 28 January, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a commercial building on Peary Street, Manchester.

“Three fire engines from Blackley, Philips Park and Salford stations were quickly mobilised to the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels, a thermal imaging camera and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire.

“GMFRS crews were in attendance for about two hours.”
