Coventry City transfer stance on Derby County rising star as talk swirls

Coventry City have rising Derby County star Louie Sibley on their recruitment radar but are not, contrary to reports, “lining up a bid” for the player.

It has been claimed by Football Insider that the Sky Blues “lead the chase” for the 20-year-old attacking midfielder as the relegated Rams face “a fight” to keep hold of their Academy graduate who is reported to be attracting interest from rival Championship clubs.

Leeds United have previously been credited with interest in the Burton-born lad who can has played across the middle but whose best position is arguably as a No.10. CoventryLive understands that City are very much aware of the player and his talent, as one would expect from any recruitment department in the second tier, but that the club are not actively pursuing the England Under-20 international.

Under contract until the summer of 2024, Sibley would cost money that Mark Robins doesn’t have at this moment in time as the club continue to go down the free agent and loan route for new signings.

That situation, however, could change if Coventry lose one of their star players in the transfer window – any sale of which would provide Robins with funds to strengthen by shopping in a very different market.

And Sibley or others of that ilk, for example, might then become an active target if, say, City sold Callum O’Hare, given that they are pretty much like-for-like in terms of style and type of player.

Sibley burst onto the Pride Park scene in March 2020 having been highly regarded in the academy. He rifled home a 30 yard bullet on his debut and then scored a hat-trick in the first game back after lockdown in a 3-2 win at Millwall in June that year, and hit another impressive strike on the final day of that season.
