Council issues update after car ploughs into butchers' shop

Town hall bosses have issued an update after a car ploughed into the back of a butchers' shop. The rear of Boult's Butchers, in Stalybridge, appeared to be trashed after a red Suzuki Swift car was driven into it yesterday afternoon (February 13).

Luckily, the driver escaped the crash unharmed, while the business was closed for the day. In a statement issued today (Tuesday), Tameside Council says the building has now been made safe following the smash.

A spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News: "The site was attended by the council’s building control team following reports of a car impacting the building. During the team’s visit, the affected part of the building was made safe by the owner.

"It is anticipated the owner will now take the necessary steps to maintain building safety going forward." Dramatic images showed that more than half the Suzuki appeared to be inside the building following the collision, while debris was seen on the ground.

John Boult, owner of Boult's Butchers, told customers that the business will now be closed until further notice. He wrote on Facebook: "As many of you may know a collision occurred yesterday, resulting in damage to the rear of our premises.

"As devastating as this is, we are just thankful nobody was injured, including the driver. Due to being closed at the time, no staff or customers were involved.

"As a result of the damage, we will remain closed until further notice. We are assessing the situation and working to ensure the safety of our premises for our staff and customers.

"We appreciate the concern and support we have received during this time, and thank the emergency services for their response."
