Police issue update after fan arrested at Manchester derby for 'mocking Munich air disaster'

A man who was arrested for allegedly 'mocking the Munich air disaster' at the Manchester derby yesterday has been released on bail, police have confirmed.

The fan, who attended the Manchester City v Manchester United clash at the Etihad, was reportedly spotted making plane gestures with his arms in the stand. It is understood that police later intervened after he was thought to have been mocking the Munich air disaster of 1958, in which 23 people died.

Videos were quickly shared across social media, which some branded 'horrendous' and 'vile'. Afterwards, another clip appeared to show officers at the stadium intervening.

Yesterday, Greater Manchester Police confirmed a man was arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting. They said he was 'promptly arrested by officers after reports were made in the crowd'.

In an update today (Monday), a spokesperson for the force said he had since been released on police bail. The Manchester Evening News understands that Manchester City are aware of the incident involving the fan and that the club issue stadium bans if people are identified, in line with their sanctions and bans policy.

A statement issued by GMP yesterday said: "During the Manchester derby, officers arrested a man on suspicion of tragedy chanting. Following reports made in the crowd, the man was promptly arrested by our officers."
