Man transporting drugs and knives flees police in Stockport but is caught by dogs

Police officers conducting routine traffic stops in Stockport yesterday (February 12) had to call for the dog unit when a man fled his vehicle after being pulled over. Little did they know, he had just run away from a collection of large knives and a big black bin bag full of freshly cultivated cannabis.

Just before midnight on Monday, vehicle interception officers pulled over a Peugeot Partner van to speak to the driver. However, as the traffic officer approached the vehicle, the man sprinted off into Reddish Vale woodland, thinking he could lose them and avoid arrest.

Seeing the driver of the van flee into the woods, the GMP officers called for the Tactical Dog Unit to help them locate the man. The highly-trained PDs, or police dogs, located the man hiding under a different vehicle, with the treat and neck rub for finding the man going to PD Bren.

Further examination of the abandoned Peugeot van revealed five large knives and a bin bag that police say was stuffed with "freshly cultivated" Class B drug cannabis.

Sergeant Paul Holt from GMP’s Tactical Dog Unit said: “This arrest underlines the great collaborative work that is done between two departments here in GMP’s Specialist Operations.

“When we got the call to assist our colleagues from TVIU to assist them in apprehending the suspect, we deployed to the location, and it did not take PD Bren long to locate the man in question.

“Five large knives along with a black bin bagged stuff with cannabis was found in the back of the van, drugs we believe had been freshly cultivated and potentially on their way to being distributed.”
