Chippenham Town 1 Maidstone United 0 match report: Injury-time goal condemns Stones to a third straight National League South defeat
Maidstone suffered a third successive defeat after conceding in added time at National League South bottom side Chippenham.
The visitors had a number of second-half chances to break the deadlock at Hardenhuish Park.
But the warning signs were there when substitute Anointed Chukwu hit the post for the Bluebirds and they pounced in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Harry Parsons scored the only goal.
Maidstone made two changes to the side who lost at Eastbourne on Tuesday night as TJ Bramble and Mo Faal came in for Jepthe Tanga and Deon Moore.
It was a switch to 4-3-3 with John Gilbert and Jamie Yila lining up either side of Faal in attack against a Bluebirds side buoyed by a midweek win over leaders Torquay.
The Stones had blown half-time leads in their past three games, taking just one point out of nine and arrived in Wiltshire looking to avoid a third straight defeat.
But the late blow sees them lose more ground in the race for a play-off place, while Chippenham move off the foot of the table.
Yila, making his second successive start, was the bright spark in a goalless first half.
The end product wasn’t always there but you couldn’t fault his commitment to taking on his man and looking to get crosses into the Chippenham box.
Chances-wise, skipper Sam Corne had an effort blocked by Tom Mehew after picking up the loose ball from a Leo Hamblin cross in the opening stages.
Midway through the half, Faal forced a decent low save from Will Henry from the edge of the box after Corne and Yila combined in midfield.
For the hosts, Stones old boy Ezio Touray stuck out a foot in a bid to divert Mehew’s wayward shot goalwards but the ball went over the bar.
Maidstone made a bright start to the second half with Faal going close
