Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne on National League safety targets, Scott Wagstaff’s new job at Gillingham and being inducted into Millwall’s Forever Lions Club
Alan Dunne feels Tonbridge need two more wins to clinch safety as they prepare to take on the “best team in the league”.
Angels boss Dunne was hugely impressed with Worthing when they won 4-0 at Longmead in an FA Trophy tie last November, tipping them to win National League South.
The Rebels are back in town on Saturday (3pm), this time with points up for grabs in the battle for promotion and survival.
Tonbridge are nine points clear of the bottom four, in 17th place, after losing 1-0 to an injury-time goal at Hemel Hempstead last weekend.
Worthing, meanwhile, are six points behind leaders Dorking, in third, following a 2-0 win over Chesham on Tuesday night.
Dunne knows the challenge facing his side but wants Tonbridge to be bold as they chase the first of those two wins the boss feels will keep them up.
“I’ve said it, I think Worthing are the best team in the league, regardless of league positions,” said Dunne.
“They play the game fairly, they’re the best footballing team in the league, they’re the best-coached team in the league, and they cause you the most problems in the league.
“They dominate possession, your keeper’s going to have to make saves, and you have to take your chances because they will give you chances.
“Make no mistake, we’ll be better equipped than we were last time but they are a difficult side to play against and our pitch is perfect for them to play on.
“We feel we probably need two wins to stay up from 11 games, so why not go for the win?
“I’ve got nothing to hold back on, we’re in a good position, we’ve got a bit of breathing space, so go for the win.”
Dunne says Gillingham are lucky to have Scott Wagstaff after the Tonbridge club captain was appointed under-18s manager at Priestfield this week.
