Ebbsfleet United 4 AFC Totton 0 match report: Finlay Barnes (2), Ben Chapman and Jake Hessenthaler score in National League South win
Finlay Barnes produced a majestic performance as the Fleet stormed to victory over AFC Totton on Saturday.
The 25-year-old scored twice as the Fleet showed their title credentials in National League South.
It was a performance they had been threatening for some weeks and it all came together for Josh Wright’s side - even a late red card for Ben Coker couldn’t take the gloss off the day.
Ebbsfleet made two changes from the side that were pegged back late on by Enfield Town on Tuesday night with Ben Chapman and Ben Coker coming into the starting line-up.
AFC Totton had two former Fleet men in their squad. Defender Tyler Cordner started while Craig Tanner was on the bench but he was introduced after 10 minutes following a shoulder injury to skipper Scott Rendell.
The visitors were ideal opponents in many ways given their poor away record, they came into the game having lost their last five games on their travels and barely laid a glove on the Fleet in a dominant first-half performance.
Totton were aggrieved that Ebbsfleet defender Tom Dallison was only booked for barging Ralph Vigrass off the pitch after 12 minutes.
When Mustapha Olagunju collected a yellow card six minutes later, two of the Fleet’s back three were in the referee’s notebook.
Totton had withstood a fast start from the Fleet but were then blown away by three goals in a 16-minute spell.
Ebbsfleet went ahead on 23 minutes as Jake Hessenthaler’s chip into the penalty area was only half-cleared and Finlay Barnes’ measured volley found the far corner.
Chapman turned down the chance to shoot two minutes later, setting up Charlie Seaman whose effort lacked power.
