Ashford United manager Craig Stone focused on his own side’s performance against Hassocks and not who goes down from Isthmian South East
Ashford United could have a big say in who goes down on the final day of the season - but manager Craig Stone is thinking only about his own side.
The Nuts & Bolts complete the Isthmian South East campaign with a home game against relegation-threatened Hassocks on Saturday (3pm).
Their opponents need to win at Homelands and hope Sheppey fail to beat second-placed AFC Croydon to survive.
Ashford, who could still pip Deal to eighth place, want to end the season in style, and will be going all-out to achieve a sixth successive home victory.
“We’ll approach it exactly the same way,” said Stone, who has seen young left-back Joe Lewis-Evans recalled by National League Aldershot.
“We’re there to win a game of football, we’re there in front of our home fans and we want to make sure we send them off for the summer on a decent performance and a decent result.
“We’ve got our awards afterwards, in the evening, so we want to make sure it’s a decent day and the best way you can do that is by having a really good performance and a decent result.
“We’re training twice this week, we’re looking at what Hassocks do and what they bring, but focusing more on ourselves.
“Barry Fuller will be back and Jack Dixon should be back, so we’ll go into it pretty strong, although we’ve lost Aaron Barnes.”
Ashford’s determination to finish on a high will be music to the ears of Sheppey, who find themselves only two points clear of Hassocks after a run of seven successive defeats.
Few will expect the Ites to get anything at second-placed AFC Croydon, given their current form, so they may end up relying on Ashford.
“They’ve made it really difficult for themselves and if Hassocks beat us, they’ll have to earn the right to stay up,” said Stone.
