Maidstone United’s 12-goal midfielder John Gilbert rejects new contract at the Gallagher Stadium and signs for Aldershot Town

Midfielder and top scorer John Gilbert has left Maidstone United for Aldershot Town.

Gilbert, who scored 12 goals for the Stones after joining from Slough Town last summer, was among eight players offered deals by new manager Craig Fagan this week.

But the 25-year-old has moved up a level to join National League Aldershot, a switch that reunites him with former Slough boss Scott Davies, who has just succeeded John Coleman as manager at the Rec.

Gilbert made 49 appearances for Maidstone, including 36 starts.

“I spoke to Scotty on the phone maybe last week, as soon as he signed,” Gilbert told Aldershot’s media team.

“As soon as he realised he’d got the job and wanted me to come here, it was a no-brainer for me.

“Just working alongside him, it’s a pleasure, so I can’t wait to get going.”

Davies said: “I’m delighted to get Gilbs on board with us.

“He’s someone who has played for me previously and knowing the way he plans, I know he will be a fans’ favourite. He’s full of energy, has an eye for goal, but also brings a real tenacity in how he plays.”

Gilbert helped Maidstone to an eighth-placed finish in National League South, scoring a number of important goals in his attacking midfield role.

“Everyone at Maidstone United would like to thank Gilbs for his contribution at the Gallagher and wishes him all the best in the National League next season,” the club said.
