Ashford United captain Gary Lockyer has one more big target in mind after breaking goal and appearance records but promotion is his main aim
Promotion is the priority for Ashford United captain Gary Lockyer after breaking two club records this season - but he still has one more personal target.
Lockyer started the campaign by overtaking Shaun Welford as the all-time top goalscorer and finished it by surpassing Pat Kingwell’s appearance record.
He goes into the close season with 112 goals and 183 matches under his belt for his hometown club.
The 33-year-old is determined to help Ashford win promotion but he also has an eye on Dave Arter’s record of 197 goals for the original Ashford Town.
If he can get there and see Ashford in a higher league, the striker will retire a happy man.
“I’d like to try and get close to Dave Arter’s Ashford Town record,” said Lockyer. “I think he got 197 and he was a great forward. People still talk about him now.
“It’s about creating my own legacy and when I’m watching Ashford as a fan, rather than playing, people are still talking about you.
“For me, the main objective is a promotion as club captain, which would be the icing on the cake.
“And if I average what I’ve been averaging the last three or four seasons, around 32 goals, it gives me two or three years before I get around that 200 mark.
“I’m on 112 now, so if I can get another 88 goals out of three or four seasons, great, and hopefully a promotion, then I will be content packing up.
“I’m 17 games away from 200 appearances and I don’t see myself going anywhere else unless Ashford decide they want to move forward with another striker, which can happen in football.
“I’ll push for that next personal record but now I’ve achieved what I wanted to achieve, promotion is the priority.”
Lockyer is confident Ashford will win promotion with co-owners Lloyd Hume and Dave Warr at the helm.
