Maidstone United Women player-manager Tori Campbell discusses her side’s title triumph as second part of potential treble secured

Player-manager Tori Campbell hailed an “unbelievable achievement” after Maidstone United Women finished the season as unbeaten league champions.

The Stones won 3-0 at Hollands & Blair on Sunday to clinch the South East Counties Women’s Premier Division title, pipping Tonbridge Angels by two points.

Victory at Star Meadow, courtesy of two goals from Georgia Pearch and a Georgia Culpitt strike, also confirmed an unbeaten league season with 16 wins and two draws from 18 games.

Maidstone had reeled in Tonbridge, completing a league double over the long-time leaders, to put the title firmly in their hands.

And they were celebrating the second leg of a possible treble after beating Blair, adding to last month’s Kent Women’s Plate success against Cray Wanderers.

“It’s an unbelievable achievement,” said Campbell. “For us, it was about getting it over the line.

“We knew what we needed to do.

“In a roundabout way, we knew if we beat Tonbridge twice they were going to be our biggest competitors.

“We did that and that set us up going to Hollands & Blair.

“I can’t fault the girls at all. They’ve been fantastic.

“It’s a shame the league only allow one team to go up because I think we both deserve to go up.

“If you look at the points between us and Tonbridge to Cray in third we’re between 15 and 20 points ahead.

“Tonbridge are a fantastic team, they were also unbeaten apart from the games against us.

“We’ve driven each other on. They always kicked off later than us so we’d finish our game and then be looking to see how they were getting on. It was that constant back-and-forth.

“They’d keep winning and it was ‘right, we’ve got to go again next week’.
