Onikan will bring out Super Eagles’ best, says Zuokemefa

If the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) wants to see the best of the Super Eagles, it should take the senior national team’s games to Mobolaji Johnson Arena, former First Bank midfielder, Belock Zuokemefa, has said.Blaming Super Eagles’ recent poor run at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on the turf that is not close to what they are used to out in Europe, Zuokemefa said: “The Lagos State government has upgraded the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (Onikan waterfront).

Yes, it is a compact arena, but it has one of the best pitches in the country at the moment. “The pitch is a hybrid synthetic turf approved by FIFA/CAF for professional games, which our boys will be quite comfortable playing on.

It is not a 100 per cent rubber/artificial turf pitch that is associated with turf toe injuries and over heating. That point needs to be emphasised.

We must learn to make use of the very best of whatever we have as a country. If Eagles are taken there in September, we will see Osimhen and co doing for Nigeria what they do for their clubs in Europe,” Zuekemefa said. The Guardian recalls that coaches and players from different parts of Africa praised the Onikan turf during the Aisha Buhari tournament, with South Africa’s coach describing it as the best playing surface in Nigeria. The Mobolaji Johnson Arena has since after the tournament been largely underutilised, but Kwara United recently used it to prosecute their CAF continental games.Follow Us

Exeter emphatically ended South African interest in this season's Heineken Champions Cup as they booked a semi-final place by beating the Stormers 42-17 at Sandy Park. The Chiefs, Champions Cup winners in 2020, will face La Rochelle or Saracens in the last four later this month after a six-try success. If reigning European champions La Rochelle beat Saracens on Sunday, the semi-final will be in Bordeaux, but a Saracens triumph would send a mouth-watering all-English showdown to Bristol City's Ashton Gate. Just a week on from a stamina-sapping victory over Montpellier that was decided on try count after extra-time, Exeter delivered an immense performance that saw them dominate every key area. The Stormers encountered difficulties travelling from Cape Town to Devon, and they were never in contention as Exeter posted tries during the first 30 minutes from full-back Tom Wyatt, captain Jack Nowell and his fellow wing Olly Woodburn, all converted by Joe Simmonds.
After facing a crushing defeat in their IPL 2023 campaign opener, Sunrisers Hyderabad will be bolstered by the return of their South African recruits, including their newly-appointed skipper Aiden Markram when they face Lucknow Super Giants in an away match on Friday. Markram missed the first game due to national commitment and it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who led SRH in the game, which they lost by a huge 72-run margin against Rajasthan Royals. But in a big boost to the team, Markram and two fellow South Africans -- Marco Jansen and Heinrich Klaasen -- have joined the side after completing their national duty.
