Doctors ignored ‘warning signs’ before Maradona’s death, court hears

SAN ISIDRO, Argentina: Diego Maradona showed “warning signs” that went unheeded during the home hospitalization leading up to his death in 2020, a witness on Tuesday told the trial examining the Argentine football legend’s demise. Seven health care professionals have been on trial since mid-April in Argentina for potential negligence that may have contributed to his death. The World Cup winner died of heart failure and acute pulmonary edema — a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs — two weeks after undergoing surgery. Forensic physician Carlos Cassinelli said he had observed “warning signs” including edema in the lower limbs, swelling in the fingers, shortness of breath and signs of hypertension and an abnormally fast heart rate. “Nobody went to see what that swelling was about” even though it posed “a life-threatening risk,” he told the court in San Isidro, north of Buenos Aires. Cassinelli is a member of a medical board that analyzed an array of records and statements to determine Maradona’s state of health. “We believe these warning signs were not taken into account by the doctors because their approach did not change,” he said, adding that he thought home hospitalization had been a mistake. According to the witness, the footballer’s condition had worsened in the days following his discharge from hospital. “The deterioration was progressive...

Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ ball heads to US auction

NEW YORK: The soccer ball that Diego Maradona used to score his notorious “Hand of God” goal during Argentina’s win over England in the 1986 World Cup is expected to sell for $10 million at a US auction this month. Maradona’s goal in the quarter-final match saw him illegally punch the ball into the net — a foul missed by the referee. After the match, the Argentine star said his goal was scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.” His nation went on to win the World Cup. Heritage Auctions, based in Texas, expects the ball will sell for eight figures when it goes under the hammer from August 21 to 23, with a $2.5 million opening bid. The jersey that Maradona, who died in November 2020, wore during the Argentina-England clash currently holds the record for the most expensive soccer shirt — standing at $9.3 million. Tensions between old foes Argentina and England flared again in a semifinal at this year’s World Cup, where the South American side prevailed before losing the final. Politically, the two sides have a long-standing sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands.

Maradona bloated, bedridden and resigned before death, says icon’s masseur

SAN ISIDRO, Argentina: Diego Maradona was bedridden, suffering from edema, and appeared resigned to his fate in his final days, according to the testimony of the Argentine football legend’s masseur at the trial into the circumstances of his death in 2020. Maradona “wouldn’t get out of bed, he didn’t want to eat, he didn’t want to wash, he didn’t want to look after his personal hygiene,” Nicolas Taffarel testified on Thursday. He claimed that at the time he had alerted the 1986 World Cup winner’s medical team that they should be more present and visit “every day,” as heard in an audio message played in court. Seven health care professionals have been on trial since mid-April in Argentina for potential negligence that may have contributed to the football icon’s death. “I reported the issues I observed with him, but I saw no concrete action or swift resolution,” added the masseur, on the verge of tears as he spoke of Maradona. “He was bloated, his legs were swollen...,” Taffarel recounted. “The doctors told me to calm down, that these symptoms would pass. When you’re anxious, you put your trust in them; you tell yourself it will pass, that everything will sort itself out.

From Maradona to Messi: Bangladesh’s enduring love for Argentina

DHAKA: There are rooftops draped in blue and white and murals of Lionel Messi everywhere — but this is not Argentina, it is Bangladesh where football-crazy fans are again celebrating their unique bond with the South American giants. The craze for Argentina has endured for decades in a country of 170 million people who have never qualified for the World Cup, but embrace the global showpiece with unmatched passion. The connection is once again on display ahead of Sunday’s final in New Jersey, where the defending champions will face Spain. While fans in Buenos Aires prepare for what they hope will be another night of celebration, the mood more than 10,000 miles away in Dhaka is also reaching fever pitch. “I was tense during the Argentina-Egypt match. I was sweating and almost cried,” motor mechanic Nurul Islam told AFP. “But now I can confidently say that Argentina will win.” Football fans in Bangladesh have traditionally split their loyalties between Argentina and Brazil, South America’s football powerhouses. But once Brazil were eliminated in the last 16 by Norway, many of their fans also threw their weight behind Argentina. By some accounts, Bangladesh is home to the largest number of fans of the Albiceleste outside Argentina. For many the love affair began with Diego Maradona’s performances at the 1986 World Cup.
