Giro d’Italia 2023: Start of Stage 13 start delayed and route changed due to bad weather as riders express concerns

Bad weather at Borgofranco d’Ivrea has led to the start of Stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia being delayed and the route changed.

The opening Grand Tour of the season has been plagued by poor weather, as has large parts of Italy which led to the cancellation of the Formula 1 Grand Prix on Sunday.

Rain was forecast, and the riders woke up to torrential downpours — which led to a delayed start. Astana posted a video of the torrential conditions heading to the start of the stage.

Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) took a maiden Grand Tour win on Stage 15’s ‘mini Lombardia’ at the Giro d’Italia after edging out Ben Healy (EF Education–EasyPost) and Marco Frigo (Israel-Premier Tech). The American closed down an earlier move from Healy, then clung to him on the last climb as the pair went into the finale together – unaware that their cat-and-mouse tactics were allowing Frigo back into contention.
Nico Denz (Bora-hansgrohe) doubled up at the Giro d’Italia after pulling off an incredible win on Stage 14, while Bruno Armirail (Groupama–FDJ) sailed into the maglia rosa as Ineos Grenadiers chose to give it away. The German, who also won Stage 12, hauled a five-strong chase group into contention in the finale, joining the leading trio of Stefano Oldani (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Davide Ballerini (Soudal Quick-Step) and Tom Skujins (Trek–Segafredo) inside the last kilometre.
Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia will see the riders begin in Sierre and cross the border into Switzerland, before making their way back towards Italy in a thrilling downhill finish. In contrast to the sharp climbs in Stage 13, there will only be one climb on Saturday in the ascent of Passo del Sempione.
