Sheffield Wednesday's League One rivals pull out of race to sign Owls goalkeeper
Exeter City have given up hope of re-signing Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson for next season. Dawson was a big hit on loan at the Grecians during the 2021/22 campaign, recording an impressive 19 clean sheets in 50 appearances as they secured automatic promotion to League One.
The 26-year-old established himself as a firm fans' favourite at St James Park. Supporters made their feelings known with chants of ‘Cameron Dawson, we want you to stay’. Exeter boss Matt Taylor has previously stated his intention to hold talks with Wednesday over Dawson's future this summer.
But when asked if there was any chance of Dawson returning to Devon, Taylor said: “No, unfortunately not. As much as the fans sing his name, they have to realise what we can afford as a football club.

"I would love to bring Cam Dawson back to the football club and everyone associated with Exeter City would love to see Cam Dawson back with ourselves, but he’s at a monster of a club in the league that we are going into and unfortunately, we simply cannot afford to bring Cam Dawson back.
“If any deal could be done which was similar to this year, then it allows us to speak to these types of goalkeepers and these types of players and these types of clubs. But realistically, on the back of the season he had previously, which was injury-affected, we got him at a really discounted rate and it was a really good deal.
“That deal worked out so well for Cam, for Sheffield Wednesday and for ourselves. The proof is in the pudding in terms of what he achieved this season but, realistically, he is in a much stronger position and Sheffield Wednesday are in a much stronger
