Key dates for Sheffield Wednesday's 2022/23 League One season as summer transfer window looms

There is a little over two months to go until Sheffield Wednesday kick off their 2022/23 season. Darren Moore's troops will line up in League One for a second successive year after failing to secure an instant return to the Championship.

The Owls finished fourth last term but missed out on promotion after losing 2-1 to Sunderland in the play-off semi-finals. It means Wednesday have to quickly draw a line under that disappointment and look to go again, with their pre-season preparations due to begin next month.

Chairman Dejphon Chansiri has already set his sights on automatic promotion. "If you ask me at the beginning of every season, I never want the play-offs," he told Yorkshire Live. "I always want to go top two.

"If not, why invest a lot of money on players? If I wanted play-offs, I could spend a lower amount. I push more to give us the potential to get promoted."

Here are all the key dates you need to know going into the 2022/23 campaign.

Fixtures for the new campaign will be released at 9am on Thursday, June 23. Barnsley, Derby County and Peterborough United will be in the third tier next season after suffering relegation from the Championship, replacing Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United and Sunderland.

Coming up from League Two are Forest Green Rovers, Exeter City, Bristol Rovers and the winner of Saturday’s play-off final between Port Vale and Mansfield.

The opening day will begin on Saturday July 30 and will conclude on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

There is in the Premier League and the Championship. They will pause fixtures from November 12, with a resumption on December 10 meaning that the final week of the World Cup will take place while the league's games resume.
