Sheffield Wednesday's League One rivals set to make intriguing managerial appointment

One of Sheffield Wednesday's League One rivals are close to appointing a new manager. Reports in the capital say Charlton Athletic have reached an agreement with Swindon Town for manager Ben Garner to take over at The Valley. An official announcement is expected in the next few days.

The Addicks have been looking for a new boss since Johnnie Jackson left the club in early May. Jackson led the South London club to a 13th-placed finish.

It is believed that Charlton have agreed personal terms with Garner on a two-year contract and have negotiated a compensation package with Swindon. The Addicks are said to also want Robins assistant coaches Scott Lindsey and Scott Marshall as part of Garner's backroom team.

Earlier this weekend, Swindon owner Clem Morfuni said he was unable to comment on Garner’s future due to the risk of “legal issues”. He told the Swindon Advertiser: “As soon as anything is concrete, we will make a comment.

“I can’t make a comment on something regarding rumours and hearsay because it jeopardises both the other club and us. We don’t want to have any legal issues that might give us a problem.

“It’s like I said when I first turned up, there are certain things we can announce and that we will discuss, but there are also certain things we can’t discuss because of legal issues.

“We’re trying to be as open and transparent as possible – I’ve said this to the advisory board. If there are rumours about a manager or a player, I can’t really say anything because it jeopardises the club.”

Charlton have today released a statement to update their fans on the managerial search. The statement read: "In an effort to update our fans, while the club remains focused on finding the right manager we are still not at a point
