The Sheffield Wednesday squad numbers available ahead of summer transfer window

Another summer of change beckons at Hillsborough. Darren Moore and his recruitment team will have to work their magic in the transfer market to rebuild a threadbare squad.

It is hoped Moore will bring in a new signing or two before the players return for pre-season training on June 20. Sheffield Wednesday are still waiting to discover if Joe Wildsmith, Jack Hunt, Massimo Luongo and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing will commit their futures to the League One club. The quartet are currently weighing up their options after receiving contract offers.

Regardless of whether Wildsmith and Co stay put, there will be a number of high-profile squad numbers available to potential new recruits. Bailey Peacock-Farrell leaves behind shirt number 1 after returning to Burnley following his fruitful loan spell. Cameron Dawson will have his eyes on the goalkeeping jersey after impressing in Exeter City's promotion to League one.

With Sam Hutchinson to be released at the end of the month, squad number 5 is up for grabs. Central defence is an area where the Owls are desperately short on numbers.

Lewis Gibson and Olamide Shodipo wore shirt numbers 4 and 7 respectively last year and are among seven loan players to have left the club. Numbers 16, 20, 22, 24, 27, 30, 38 and 42 are also vacant.

It remains to be seen whether Alex Hunt will play a key role in Moore's long-term plans. The midfielder was loaned out to Grimsby Town and Oldham Athletic during the 2021/22 season.
