Robbie Savage's heart-warming verdict on son Charlie's Manchester United captaincy vs Leeds

Manchester United got their pre-season campaign up and running with victory over Leeds United on Wednesday.

United headed to Norway to take on the now-Championship Whites in Oslo. It kicks off a busy fixture schedule for Erik ten Hag's side in the month leading up to the new Premier League season.

And the Reds began their preparations for the 2023/24 campaign in the best possible way with a 2-0 victory. Goals in the second half from youngsters Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill secured the win.

Ten Hag changed the entire XI at half-time to give as many players as possible minutes and it gave a chance for the younger players to show what they can do in the first team. It was a youthful side in the second half, led by Charlie Savage who took the captain's armband.

The midfielder is back at United having spent the second part of last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers and the 20-year-old was delighted to skipper the side. Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Great start to pre season beating Leeds, was an honour to captain my boyhood club."

His dad Robbie, who like his son came through the youth team ranks at United in the early 1990s in the same group as the famed Class of 92, was proud of his son's achievement. Responding to the tweet with a heart emoji, Savage senior wrote: "Keep working hard. Proud of you."
