Brendan Rodgers insists Leicester City are “very, very close” to the level required to challenge for the top six again and believes they have a “fantastic chance” of disrupting the Premier League’s elite next season.

The City boss gave a confident view of the new campaign after his side finished the season with a 4-1 win over Southampton that lifted them to eighth in the Premier League table. James Maddison, Jamie Vardy, and an Ayoze Perez double secured the victory in a frantic second half at the King Power Stadium.

City will have a few weeks off before returning for pre-season ahead of a campaign where a lack of European football will give them plenty of time on the training ground. There, Rodgers feels issues can be ironed out so that City can compete at the top again.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl asked Leicester City to let his side walk the ball into the net to equalise following a controversial opening goal at the King Power Stadium.

Hasenhuttl’s team went down 4-1 to City on the Premier League’s final day, with James Maddison starting the scoring a few minutes into the second half. The goal came from a drop ball, with Kasper Schmeichel launching it upfield, and with Jamie Vardy capitalising on two poor headers by Lyanco to force Alex McCarthy into a save, the rebound falling to Maddison.
