Top makes Leicester City request to Brendan Rodgers after European setback

Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddahanaprabha wants to see Brendan Rodgers' team fight for domestic trophies now they do not have European football to contend with.

City missed out on a place in one of Uefa’s competitions after finishing eighth in the Premier League table, four points off the European places, and losing in the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League. For the first time in three years, City will only play in domestic competitions next season.

But the club’s owner wants them to make the most of that and push for more silverware. City clinched the FA Cup for the first time in their history last year, while there have been three other occasions under Rodgers where they have made it to at least the last eight of the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.

Top wrote in the final City programme of the year: “We won’t have European football next season, but that gives us an opportunity to reset and make sure we’re ready to compete in every competition domestically, fight for trophies and take our fans back to Europe as soon as we can.

“We’ve said for some time that regularly qualifying for Uefa competitions is one of our long-term goals. To do that, you need to make sure you learn from the experiences you have in Europe and use them to make you stronger in the future.

“It’s the third time we have qualified for Europe since we have owned the club – as many times as Leicester had ever qualified for major European competitions before that – and I think that shows we are making progress. From Warsaw, Moscow, Naples, Randers, Rennes, Eindhoven, and Rome we took important, varied experiences that will make us better.
