Philippe Clement rages at Rangers red card and accuses referee of killing Champions League dream

Philippe Clement fumed at Italian referee Marco Guida and accused him of killing Rangers’ Champions League dream.

The whistler sent Brazilian full back Jefte off five minutes into the second half of their qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden for a second yellow card that Clement insists wasn't even a foul. Clement was seething at full time after the Ukrainians took full advantage to hit two late goals and consign the Light Blues to the Europa League group stage for a second season running.

Clement said of Jefte second yellow card when he went in for an aerial challenge: “I’ve seen the images back and it’s clearly not even a foul. Jefte jumps higher than the man. That’s what happened. He didn’t move his arm towards the man or whatever. It’s an incredible, decisive decision of the game. Everyone who saw the game could see we were the better team on the ball against a good Dynamo Kyiv team.

“We had a few chances. It was difficult to open them up but we knew they would get tired during the second half but after five minutes we got that red card against us and it’s a big knock because it’s a decisive moment in the game. But even then, after that, with 10 men I was really proud of my players because even then until we got the goal against we were the team getting the better, most dangerous, moments.

“The decision was a game changer and that’s really hard for my dressing room because with one decision of one person you take away the dream of a whole dressing room. The most important thing is that people see this team is growing. Of course, financially it’s a big difference for the club and for transfers coming in. We know that, that’s the reality. That’s why I said I don’t expect the rebuild to be done in four weeks.
