Missing Jay Slater in Tenerife LIVE updates as Spanish police issue update on search

Police in Tenerife have issued an update on the search for missing British teenager Jay Slater, insisting they are still investigating several lines of enquiry.

It comes after the Spanish authorities called off the official hunt for the 19-year-old following two weeks of extensive searches. But today (July 9), police insisted that several lines of enquiry were still being pursued. A source close to the case insisted investigators were not working on the basis Jay was 'missing feared dead'. His family remain on the island, and are understood to have recently widened their search area.

Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared on the Spanish island on the morning of June 17. On Monday, the search for the teenager passed the tragic landmark of three weeks since he vanished, with no sign of him identified since.

Over the weekend, reporters at the scene said they had found 'eerie signs of life' in the ravine near where Jay went missing. The teenager's devastated family, including his mum Debbie, dad Warren Slater and older brother Zak, remain in Tenerife as they continue to search for answers into his disappearance.

Spanish police called off the search on the ground for Jay on June 30 after almost two weeks of hunting for the teenager in vast and mountainous terrain. Police said officers would continue to act on any tip-offs or other information that came in but the active work that has been ongoing since the apprentice bricklayer was reported missing would cease.

Today (July 9), police told The Mirror that several lines of enquiry were still being pursued.
