'Human remains' found in Jay Slater search as Civil Guard issue statement on cause of death

Jay Slater is believed to have died following an 'accidental fall' according to Civil Guard in Tenerife.

The teenager, from Lancashire, went missing in June 17 after attending a rave in Playa de las Americas. He then headed north to a remote corner of the Canary Island after being invited to an Airbnb on the fringe of Masca by two men.

Jay, 19, left the property on foot, calling a friend to say he was lost and had one per cent battery on his phone. Emergency services swarmed the Cruz de Hilda area until June 30, as they spent 12 days trying to find the teenager.

Today (July 15), the Civil Guard confirmed they had found a body, believed to be missing Jay, in the Masca area. It is believed he had suffered a, 'accidental fall' due to the 'rough' area in which the discovery was made.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard said today: “After 29 constant days of searching the lifeless body of the young man has been found in the Masca area. “Everything is pointing to the body being that of the young British man who disappeared on June 17, pending full identification. Initial inquiries are pointing to him having suffered an accident/fall in the area where he was found.”

In a fuller statement the force added: “Officers of the Civil Guard belonging to the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) have located this morning the dead body of a young man in the area of Masca, belonging to the municipality of Buenavista del
