Met Office issues snow update as Arctic blast to hit UK increasing chance of 'wintry hazards'

The Met Office has warned of a mounting chance of 'wintry hazards' next week as temperatures remain colder than average with an Arctic front moving in. Parts of the UK have already seen snow fall overnight as the mercury fell below 1C.

Next week, there could be more snow showers to come with the right 'ingredients' on the way, according to the forecaster. Coastlines in the north of the UK are most likely to be impacted.

Further cold weather is to be expected for much of this week due to the influence of high pressure, with southern areas feeling particularly chilly. But snow could be on the way as soon as Sunday (January 14) due to a northerly airflow developing.

Speaking in the latest Met Office Deep Dive, which takes an in-depth look at the meteorological drivers behind the UK’s long-range outlook, Aidan McGivern said: “A cold front from the north towards the weekend will mark another change in the airmass for the UK, moving from something with a bit of an Atlantic influence to air that comes more directly from the Arctic.

"This front over the weekend will bring some rain to northern areas, with the west of Scotland likely to most in the way of rain." Will Lang, Met Office head of situational awareness, added: “There will be a resurgence in the really cold weather through the weekend and that spreads across the whole of the UK during the early part of next week.

"Initially, this means there will be more in the way of showers around the coasts, turning increasingly to snow for many areas, especially further north.”
