Met Office says there's a chance of seeing the Northern Lights in the UK tonight

Those lucky enough may get the chance to see the Northern Lights this evening. According to the Met Office there will be a period of clear and dark skies which will give people in parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland a sighting of the spectacle.

Also known as the aurora borealis, the Northern Lights could be visible on Monday evening (January 22) and in the early hours of Tuesday (January 23). The geomagnetic light show will come just before a large wall of rain from Storm Jocelyn arrives in the UK from the west.

The Met Office Space Weather forecast says: "There is a chance of seeing the aurora tonight (22-23 January). Those in Scotland, northern England, Northern Ireland and similar latitudes have the best chance of aurora sightings where the weather is favourable and given clear, dark skies.

"The auroral oval will reduce to background conditions again over the next few days, but there remains a chance of aurora sightings across parts of Scotland or similar latitudes on Tuesday night (23-24 January)."
