Gillingham defender Logan Dobbs’ reaction after scoring his first league goal in the 2-0 win against Tranmere Rovers

Gillingham’s teenage goalscorer Logan Dobbs insists he still has plenty to learn and does not yet see himself as a first-team player.

The 19-year-old has started the last five games after captain Liam Gordon was injured and Sam Gale was sold before the season began, thrusting him into regular senior action sooner than he expected.

Dobbs has grabbed his opportunity with both hands, scoring his first league goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

But even after fulfilling a dream by heading in at the Rainham End, the youngster insists he is still very much learning his trade.

“I don’t really see myself as a first-team player at the moment,” said Dobbs.

“I still see myself as a youngster coming through. I feel like I’ve got a lot to learn and hopefully I can keep playing games and show what I can do.”

Dobbs, who turns 20 next week, had already scored on his senior Gills debut in the EFL Trophy last September, but his first league goal was particularly special with his parents in the stands.

“I’ve dreamed of this since I was 16, scoring in front of the Rainham End, winning, getting a clean sheet,” he said.

“It’s something I didn’t believe, to be honest. I didn’t know how to celebrate. But that emotion, I’ve never felt anything like that before.

“Every game it feels unbelievable, especially when my parents come down to watch. I gave my mum a hug after.”'

His parents rarely attend his games, but Dobbs joked that their presence had turned them into his lucky charms.

“It’s funny, my mum and dad never come to any games and [before the match] I was like, ‘You’ve got to come’.

“I’ve scored and I was like, ‘You’re my lucky charm now, you’ve got to come to every single game!

“The feeling of scoring is unbelievable.”
