Merson tips Liverpool to beat Wolves ‘comfortably’ to set up Gerrard vs Man City ‘fairytale’

Liverpool will beat Wolves comfortably on the final day and that could set up a fairy-tale ending that sees Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa hold Manchester City, according to Paul Merson.

City enter the final day of the Premier League season a point ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s side but they know that if Liverpool can get three points at home to Wolves, they must beat Aston Villa to retain their title.

Villa have a number of ex-Liverpool men in their ranks with manager Gerrard, assistant manager Gary Mcallister, midfielder Phillippe Coutinho and forward Danny Ings all spending time with the club.

Much has been made of if the former Reds contingent will have extra motivation to get a result at City, but both Gerrard and Coutinho have played that down.

Former Arsenal man Merson believes that Liverpool will have enough to beat Wolves and that might just set up the fairy-tale end they are dreaming of.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson said: “You don’t come this far in a Premier League title race only to falter at the final hurdle, so I think Liverpool will win this one comfortably.

“I was shocked with the number of changes they made against Southampton, but the players Jurgen Klopp put out gave it everything they had to get all three points.

“Manchester City should have beaten West Ham last week but ended up dropping two valuable points, enhancing Liverpool’s hopes of winning the title on the final day of the season.
