Man City fans' Steven Gerrard chant after beating Liverpool to Premier League title

Steven Gerrard did his upmost to hand the Premier League title to his beloved Liverpool.

In what always promised to be a thrilling conclusion to the English top-flight season on Sunday night, the Reds legend had it within his ability to put the title on a plate for his former employers.

And boy did the Aston Villa manager give it his best shot: propelling his side into an astonishing 2-0 lead at the Etihad Stadium to leave the door ajar for Liverpool to become kings of England.

You can picture the fairytale narrative in your head right now as Gerrard celebrates victory over Pep Guardiola in his final game of the season and even toasts Liverpool winning the league to boot.

But alas, not only did Liverpool never actually take the lead against Wolverhampton Wanderers while Villa were in charge, but the Citizens romped their way to an astonishing comeback.

As soon as Ilkay Gundogan pulled a goal back for the reigning champions in the 76th minute, you got the feeling that the floodgates might open – and open they did.

Guardiola’s men smashed three goals past the Birmingham club in the space of just five minutes to render Liverpool’s late strikes from Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson immaterial.

It was a breath-taking turnaround that wrapped up Premier League glory for City and ensured that there would be plenty of jokes at Gerrard’s expense for having let Villa’s two-goal lead slip.

And rest assured that the Etihad faithful made the most of the Gerrard narrative as they could be heard chanting about the former England and Liverpool star once the final whistle blew.
