Manchester United switch focus onto Sergio Reguilon amid Marc Cucurella transfer doubts

Manchester United have switched their attention to Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon amid doubts over a loan deal for Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea left-back Cucurella, who started in their 2-1 League Cup second round win over AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday night, is United's preferred choice but United want the option to terminate a loan in the January transfer window.

Because Cucurella has already played for Chelsea this season, he cannot be transferred to a third club in a season.

The Manchester Evening News revealed Reguilon, 26, was on United's left-back shortlist that they compiled last week, although there was concern over his salary demands.

United considered a move for Reguilon three years ago but opted to sign Alex Telles from Porto instead.

Cucurella, 25, joined Chelsea from Brighton for £62million last year but is out of favour under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, who prefers Ben Chilwell at left wing-back. Cucurella is contracted to Chelsea until 2028 while Reguilon is tied to Spurs until 2025. United want a specialist left-back who is on the market.

The Manchester Evening News revealed on Friday United are open to signing a left-back as Luke Shaw is expected to be out for at least two months with a muscular injury.

Fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia has been out with an unspecified injury since he returned to the club over a month ago and the Dutchman is not due to be available again until after the September internationals.
