Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho handed Argentina blow

Alejandro Garnacho has been left out of the Argentina squad for the upcoming international break.

Lionel Scaloni's side have two massive 2026 World Cup qualifiers to look forward to over the next fortnight. The current holders host Uruguay on Friday before travelling to Brazil next Wednesday.

Scaloni confirmed his 28-man squad for the two matches overnight but Garnacho's name was not present. The Manchester United winger will not be involved, seemingly replaced by the returning Angel Di Maria.

The 35-year-old is enjoying an excellent season in Portugal with Benfica and has earned his place back in the national team. Scaloni also picked the likes of Julián Álvarez, Lautaro Martínez and Paulo Dybala in the attacking roles.

Garnacho had made the previous two squads for international breaks in September and October. But he did not feature in the latter and only got six minutes off the bench against Bolivia in the former.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a good run of starts at United in recent weeks, owing in part to the exile of Jadon Sancho and poor form of Antony. Garnacho has started four times since the start of the month and played more than an hour each time but failed to register an assist.

Garnacho will likely remain in Manchester over the next fortnight to continue training with other Reds not involved on international duty. The teenager will hope his presence while others are away will help him to continue a good run at club level when United face Everton at Goodison Park on November 26.
