Manchester United player's injury absence explained as £20m training ground improvements revealed

The October international break is now officially over after the final games were played on Wednesday.

Several Manchester United players have been in action over the last 24 hours, with Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire involved as England beat Italy 3-1. Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay were also in action for their respective nations.

Those and others will now return to Manchester in the coming days as Erik ten Hag prepares his side to face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday evening. The Reds went into the break in a high after beating Brentford 2-1 but will need to carry that momentum through after a tough start.

Malacia absence

Tyrell Malacia has been a long-term absentee for United because he's recovering from surgery after a knee injury. Malacia last played for United against Fulham on the final day of last season and he was absent throughout the entirety of pre-season due to his injury.

The Manchester Evening News understands Malacia sustained the knee injury last season and the club initially looked to manage it with pain injections, but surgery was eventually required.

It's understood the player was on crutches after the injury and he spent some time in the Netherlands to recover. He's now back in Manchester and sources have indicated he's expected to return before the New Year.

“Malacia's will take some time, the same as Amad and Kobbie, they are really impact injuries,” Ten Hag said at a press conference about his injury before the opening game of the campaign against Wolves.
