Manchester United legend Roy Keane branded 'clown' by ex-teammate

Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has branded his ex-international teammate Roy Keane a 'clown' after the Manchester United legend's comments about him.

On a recent episode of the Stick to Football podcast, Keane sat down with Gary Neville, Jill Scott and Ian Wright to discuss all of his sendings off during his career. One of these dismissals came in 2002 when United faced Sunderland.

McAteer lined up for the Black Cats that day and was involved in an altercation with Keane despite the pair playing together for the Republic of Ireland. The United captain was shown his marching orders after being adjudged to have elbowed McAteer.

Reflecting on the incident though, Keane was adamant he should not have been sent off and insinuated his ex-teammate had it coming. He explained: "Just because you play with someone doesn't mean you're mates.

"Do you know what, he was one of these players who shouts their mouth off. I didn't mind lads kicking me or booting me, honestly, but McAteer as usual had plenty to say for himself.

"But even then, I didn't deserve to be sent off in that game, absolutely not. If you look back on it, I didn't even catch him."

Having seen what Keane had to say about him, McAteer did not take his comments lightly. Sharing a video compilation of all Keane's red cards, the 52-year-old tweeted: "Love it. Players shouting their mouths off!!!

"Funny you can’t shut the clown up now. And no we weren’t teammates cause he never showed up and when he did he went home!!!! Please!!!!! Bore off."

Keane and McAteer represented the Republic of Ireland together on 26
