Roy Keane is wrong about one player he thinks is on his 'last straw at Manchester United

Roy Keane might have got his way had Scott McTominay departed Old Trafford this summer. But on current form he is one man Erik ten Hag cannot afford to sell.

The all-action McTominay has rarely been the in-thing at Manchester United since graduating through the famed academy system. Jose Mourinho - the manager who gave the Scot his senior debut in 2017 - referred to him as the club's best player a couple of years later when the Portuguese had been handed his P45.

Yet there are not too many who would publicly agree with that verdict. Not least Keane, who has often slammed McTominay - who turns 27 today - for perceived shortcomings in midfield.

Even his current manager needed a little bit of convincing. McTominay was made available for transfer this summer and West Ham were thought to be lurking, armed with £30million in cash for his signature.

How that might have played out is anyone's guess, but Erik ten Hag will be thanking his lucky stars the midfielder did stay put. He remains indebted to the Scot for what he has brought United in testing times.

McTominay sparked pandemonium at Old Trafford when he scored twice in added-time to gun down Brentford in October and his latest double - without such late drama - was equally telling during the Chelsea win as United got back to winning ways. McTominay was serenaded by the supporters while he conducted post-match media duties.
