Manchester Airport issues urgent update ahead of Storm Éowyn winds as amber weather warning issued

Manchester Airport has issued an update to travellers ahead of severe weather warnings for wind on Friday (January 23). Storm Éowyn is expected to bring widespread disruption, with amber and red weather alerts in place in across many areas of the UK.

The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings of varying severities including two rare 'danger to life' red warnings for wind, which cover Northern Ireland and areas in southern and central Scotland.

In the north west, including Manchester, an amber warning is in place. The Met Office says 'very strong winds' are expected to bring 'widespread disruption', including power cuts, damage to buildings and vehicles, and delays or cancellations to road, rail and air travel.

In an update on X, Manchester Airport urged travellers jetting off on Friday to 'check with airlines for up-to-date information' in the case of delays or cancellations.

The post read: "High winds are expected across the UK tomorrow due to Storm Eowyn. If you are due to travel from Manchester Airport, please check with your airline for up-to-date flight information.

"Road and rail services may also be impacted, so please allow extra time and care for your journey to the airport. The safety of our passengers is always our top priority."

Forecasters from the Met Office are expecting gusts of wind up to 100mph in some areas on Friday, with widespread travel disruption likely across much of the UK.

Passengers could be impacted by the latest warning from TransPennine Express (TPE), which urged customers not to travel between Manchester and Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh, or on services between York, Newcastle, and Edinburgh, due to the expected winds. There are also no Avanti West Coast services travelling
