Met Office wind and sleet warning for Greater Manchester
Bracing winds are set to blast Greater Manchester today - leaving the region feeling very cold. A yellow cold health alert from the UK Health Security Agency is in force across the North until 9am on Tuesday (February 10) as forecasters expect chilly conditions.
Actual temperatures will be well above freezing across Greater Manchester today (Monday). However, a fierce easterly wind is bringing a blast of cold air to the region.
According to the Met Office, it means temperatures will feel a lot colder than they really are - seeming well below zero in some parts of the region. Manchester is forecast for highs of 5C and lows of 3C overnight - but the Met Office's 'feels like' temperature climbs no higher than 1C this afternoon.
For the rest of the day, forecasters say it will feel 0C in the city, or -1C at around 8am and 9am. The region's outer boroughs are set for even cooler conditions.
Oldham is forecast for highs of 3C and lows of 1C, but the 'feels like' temperature will range between just -2C and -4C. Wind gusts of more than 30mph are possible in the region this morning and afternoon, making the cold winds particularly forceful.
Spells of light rain are forecast for most of Greater Manchester, with a brief period of heavy rain expected at 9am in Rochdale and Tameside. Oldham could see wintry conditions at times this morning and again from 7pm, with sleet in the forecast, while Rochdale is also forecast for sleet at night. Bolton, Trafford and Wigan could see a dry, overcast day.
