Met Office issue UK yellow weather warning and warn of 'cold snap' coming

The UK's weather has seen a mixed start to February, but a Met Office yellow weather warning for heavy rain remains in place for south-west Scotland in Dumfries and Galloway. The warning, which has been in place since 9pm on Monday until 1pm today, could lead to some flooding and travel disruption on Tuesday.

However, according to the latest weather maps, a band of rain continues to sweep east across the UK this morning, with the chance of Greater Manchester seeing rain increasing as we head towards noon until around 2pm. For the rest of England and Wales, the Met Office predicts mostly dry conditions and some sunny spells once the low cloud and fog has cleared.

Tonight will see the cloud and patchy rain clearing southeast England, resulting in dry and clear periods for most. However, the Met Office warns blustery showers will affect some northern areas, turning wintry on the hills.

Going into Wednesday, a dry and bright day is forecast for most "with periods of winter sunshine". However, isolated showers are possible in the north and west, turning wintry over northern hills at first. By Wednesday, the Met Office says it will start to feel colder.

Looking ahead, Frank Saunders, the Met Office Chief Meteorologist, says: "It’s worth being aware that despite a largely pleasant week ahead, there’s a good chance the UK will experience a dip in temperatures at the weekend and into next week.

"High-pressure is set to move in, bringing along with it easterly winds, low temperatures and an increasing risk of wintry hazards like snow and ice. We’ll know more as the week goes on so it’s worth keeping up-to-date with the forecast in your area."
