Man Utd news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged to follow Sir Alex Ferguson with next move

Scottish football legend Charlie Nicholas believes Aberdeen should appoint former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new manager.

The Dons are on the hunt for their new coach after sacking Stephen Glass earlier this month, with former Celtic midfielder Barry Ferguson taking temporary charge.

Solskjaer has been out of work since leaving Old Trafford in November and Nicholas thinks he is an ideal candidate for Sir Alex Ferguson's former club.

Ferguson led Aberdeen to three Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups and the Scottish League during the early 1980s.

He also famously inspired the Pittodrie outfit to victory against Spanish giants Real Madrid in the Cup Winners' Cup final in May 1983.

Aberdeen went on to win the Super Cup against European champions Hamburg six months later to complete a remarkable continental double.

The Dons have struggled since Ferguson's departure - winning just four domestic cups in the last 35 years - and are currently eighth in the Scottish Premiership.

"If Aberdeen really want to make a statement they should go and make an attempt to speak to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer," Nicholas told the Scottish Daily Express.

"I was thinking about managerial options for my old club and I would love them to go out and make a real statement of intent.

"Why not go and ask the former Manchester United manager if he is interested? He can only say no, but if you don’t ask you don’t get.

"People might say he has just managed one of the biggest clubs in the world, why would he even consider Aberdeen?"

During his three years in charge of United, Solskjaer guided the Red Devils to second in the Premier League and Europa League but failed to win a major honour.
